Aerolase, A More Considered Approach to Laser

Laser treatments have traditionally been associated with heat, discomfort and downtime. While many technologies rely on controlled thermal injury to stimulate change within the skin, advances in laser technology now offer a more precise approach, delivering effective results with greater comfort and less downtime.

At RIYA, we work with the Aerolase Neo Elite, a non-ablative laser designed to address a range of concerns, including acne, rosacea, melasma, pigmentation and signs of ageing. What makes this technology particularly interesting is its ability to target several underlying processes involved in these conditions, particularly inflammation, while limiting excess heat in the surrounding tissue.

I. A treatment that works beneath the skin's surface

THE SCIENCE BEHIND AEROLASE

All lasers work by delivering light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by specific structures, such as water, pigment or blood vessels, and converted into heat. This process, known as selective photothermolysis, allows us to create a controlled thermal response within a chosen target.

While heat is essential to the effectiveness of many laser treatments, how it is delivered matters. With certain technologies, prolonged or excessive heating can affect surrounding tissue, increasing discomfort, irritation and the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Aerolase combines a 1064nm Nd wavelength, which penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin, with an exceptionally short 650-microsecond pulse duration — less than one-thousandth of a second.

This rapid delivery of energy limits the time available for heat to spread beyond its intended target, allowing for a controlled thermal response. The result is a treatment that works beneath the skin's surface while remaining generally comfortable, with minimal downtime.

THE ROLE OF INFLAMMATION

Inflammation plays a significant role in many common skin conditions, including acne, rosacea and melasma.

When the skin encounters irritation, bacteria or environmental stress, it releases chemical messengers that initiate an immune response. This chain reaction is known as the inflammatory cascade.

While inflammation is essential for healing, persistent inflammatory activity can contribute to breakouts, redness, sensitivity and uneven pigmentation.
One of the most interesting aspects of Aerolase is its ability to address several factors involved in these conditions.

In acne-prone skin, the laser can influence sebaceous gland activity, reduce acne-associated bacterial activity and improve inflammatory lesions. It can also help address lingering redness and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

For rosacea, Aerolase interacts with haemoglobin within blood vessels, helping reduce persistent redness and visible capillaries.

In melasma, where inflammation and increased vascular activity can contribute to excess pigment production, carefully controlled laser energy may help improve both pigmentary and vascular components.

Rather than focusing solely on visible symptoms, Aerolase allows us to address several of the underlying factors contributing to these concerns.

A NOTE ON PIGMENTATION

For those prone to melasma or pigmentation following laser treatments, the management of heat is particularly important.

Melasma is a complex condition influenced by hormones, genetics, UV exposure and inflammation. Excessive heat can aggravate pigmentation, sometimes leading to rebound darkening following treatment.

Aerolase's unique wavelength has relatively low absorption by melanin in the epidermis compared with many shorter wavelengths. Combined with its ultra-short pulse duration, this helps limit unwanted surface heating.

This also makes it a versatile option across darker Fitzpatrick skin types, including skin tones that may be more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

While no laser is entirely without risk, Aerolase offers a more controlled approach for appropriately selected pigment-sensitive skin.

ANTI-AGEING BENEFITS

Aerolase also supports skin rejuvenation through controlled heating within the dermis, encouraging collagen remodelling and gradual improvements in fine lines, firmness and skin texture.

Despite working at depth, treatment is generally very comfortable. Most guests experience gentle warmth, with no need for numbing cream and little to no downtime.

Results develop progressively, with a course of treatments often recommended depending on the skin concern.

WHY AEROLASE AT RIYA

Every technology we introduce at RIYA is chosen with intention.

We value treatments that combine clinical efficacy with an understanding of the skin's physiology and long-term health.

Aerolase reflects this approach, allowing us to look beyond visible symptoms and address contributing factors with precision.
